QR Codes and Political Campaigns

With smartphone users being half of today’s population of mobile phone users it is no wonder that even Politicians and Politcal Campaigns are quickly utilizing the power of QR codes. While rates of QR Code usage rise, it only seems logical that Politicians looking to appeal to a wide demographic are using them. Being able to use QR codes is so simple that not only can Politicians appeal to the young generation but also to the older, more experienced voters.

Designing an QR code used in Political Campaigns is useful because of the ability to post calendar events, e-mails addresses, contact information, campaign information, such as where a political rally or debate will be held. One of the most widely used methods for QR codes in political campaigns, is something called Political Direct Mail.

Political direct mail is simply this, you know the flyers that always crop up in our mailboxes every campaigning season? Well, now most of them are coming with QR codes on them. While most QR codes come with a promise of coupons or special deals, QR codes in regards to political fare are more like this, when a code is scanned, the voter can access exclusive information and updates about the candidate for office. Important developments in the polls can be posted via QR code or an exclusive invite to a political event can be promised from the use of a QR code.

Campaign signs on lawns and in the windows of the campaign office can also be utilized to generate interest and where a candidate stands in terms of the issues. This is also accepted and approved by a lot of the younger generation as it is now even easier and faster for young voters to understand where a candidate stands in terms of the issues. Using QR codes in television commercials to generate interest is becoming popular. However, using them in a political commercial can sometimes be tricky as they would need to take up the majority of the screen and be on the screen for more than a few seconds, as the voter needs time to scan the QR code.

While it might seem counterproductive to use QR codes on a candidates’ website, it can often be very beneficial. QR codes can often lead to a mobile app to stay up to date with the campaign trail or bring them to exclusive content regarding the political views of the candidate. It can even give information for anyone interested in becoming part of the campaign itself, by either volunteering their time in the home offices or spreading posters with QR codes on them around the city to create awareness. While QR codes seem to be predominately a business venture QR codes can help Politicians reach a vast audience and get their information out there for the public.
